San Francisco 49ers All-Pro tight end George Kittle (smartly) isn't much of a Twitter participant, mostly sticking to compliments about his teammates and hashtag-filled sponsored ads about Halo. But on Wednesday, he was compelled to log on and cryptically correct the record regarding his future status with the 49ers, while also taking a firm stance about the prevalence (or lack thereof) of truth and facts on the Internet.

Not everything is to be believed, it turns out.

Kittle's displeasure comes from a report by Sports Illustrated's Grant Cohn entitled "George Kittle to Sign Six-Year Extension with 49ers on Friday." A definitive headline, with ensuing details that are also straightforward enough: Cohn says Kittle is close to signing a six-year extension worth up $94.8 million, with $47.4 million guaranteed. This would make Kittle the second-highest paid 49ers player, behind Jimmy Garoppolo, in terms of guaranteed money.

Here's the problem: The headline leaves no wiggle room for any other contract length or dollar amount, but Cohn makes clear that this is nothing more than a rumor from a trusted source "who has been correct in the past." Presumably, this source is not Kittle.

Either Cohn's source is spot-on, and Kittle is pissed he can't break the news himself in a Players' Tribune post scheduled for Friday called San Francisco Is Home, or Cohn's source is incorrect, and thus has potentially low-balled Kittle—purposefully or accidentally—in the midst of a tenuous negotiation.

George, if you want to set the record straight, or just chat about the perils of Twitter, my DMs are open.
