David Bote hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer in Chicago’s four-run sixth inning, and the Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 on Monday night for a doubleheader split at Wrigley Field.
The Cardinals won the opener 3-1.
With two outs and runners on the corners, Bote put Chicago — which had lost four in a row — ahead to stay with a drive to center field off Tyler Webb.
Chicago was still searching for its first hit before Willson Contreras doubled home Javier Baez earlier in the inning, setting the stage for Bote’s third homer of the season.
St. Louis wasted a big performance by Brad Miller, who homered twice and drove in three runs. Miller also had a big swing in Game 1, hitting a tie-breaking two-run double in the seventh.
Dexter Fowler connected for St. Louis in the opener of a five-game series, and Max Schrock hit his first career homer in Game 2.
The Cardinals dropped to 3-2 since returning from a coronavirus outbreak that derailed their season.
Padres 14, Rangers 4: Fernando Tatis Jr. homered twice, including a grand slam for his majors-leading 11th of the season, and San Diego routed Texas to stop a five-game skid. Tatis had seven RBIs. Tatis hit a three-run shot for a 10-3 lead in the seventh inning on a 405-foot liner pulled into the San Diego bullpen in left-center field for his hardest hit of the season at 113 mph, according to Statcast.
Braves 7, Nationals 6: Dansby Swanson hit a two-out, two-run game-ending homer to cap Atlanta’s four-run ninth. Adam Duvall made it close by hitting a two-run shot and Johan Camargo followed with a single. But Daniel Hudson retired the next two hitters to put the Braves down to their final out.
White Sox 7, Tigers 2: Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada hit back-to-back homers off Matthew Boyd leading off the bottom of the first as part of Chicago’s six-homer night. Six days earlier, the White Sox got homers from Anderson and Eloy Jimenez to open the game against Boyd. According to Stats LLC, Chicago is the first team in MLB history to open two games in a season with back-to-back homers off the same pitcher.
Astros 2, Rockies 1: Carlos Correa hit a two-run double and Brandon Bielak held Colorado to one run and one hit in six innings for host Houston.
Dodgers 11, Mariners 9: Kiké Hernandez hit a two-run homer to cap a five-run seventh as host Los Angeles outslugged Seattle for its sixth consecutive victory.
Yankees 6, Red Sox 3: Luke Voit homered twice as host New York completed a four-game sweep to run its winning streak against Boston to 10 games.
